Self-Service Check-In · Independent Hotels & Motels

The front desk that
never sleeps.

A tablet kiosk scans the guest's driver's license on-device, matches their booking, and prints a registration slip. A remote agent approves from anywhere. One person can cover multiple properties overnight.

The problem

Independent operators don't get the kiosk budget.

The La Quinta and Marriott properties handled this years ago. Independent hotels and motels still lose to it — or hire an overnight clerk at $150–$250 per night.

🌙
Night shift = $150–$250/night

Per property. A 30-room motel pays $4,500–$7,500/month just to cover late arrivals.

😤
Late arrivals get stranded

One bad late check-in turns into a 1-star review that costs more than a month of software.

🔑
Key-handoff still needs a human

Even with lockboxes, guests need their booking confirmed and paperwork completed. That human just doesn't need to be on-site.

Guest experience

Scan. Match. Approve. Print.

Under 90 seconds start to finish. No app download. No account creation for the guest.

1
Tap to begin
Guest taps the kiosk screen. Full-screen, idle-safe, no download required.
2
Scan license
The PDF417 barcode on the back of the US DL is decoded on-device. Raw image never leaves the tablet.
3
Booking match
Name matched against the reservation by confirmation number or surname + phone last-4. Guest confirms room and rate.
4
Agent approves
Remote agent reviews the session on the desk console and taps Approve. Takes about 10 seconds.
5
Slip prints
Registration slip prints (room, WiFi, parking, rate). Agent marks key issued via smart lock, lockbox, or drop window.

System

Three pieces. One complete loop.

The guest talks to the kiosk. The kiosk talks to the backend. The backend talks to the agent. The agent closes the loop.

Kiosk Tablet
iPad or Android tablet running the Boojee Check-In PWA. Full-screen, offline-tolerant. No app store download. Decodes AAMVA barcodes on-device via ZXing.
Boojee Backend
Serverless API on AWS Lambda + DynamoDB. Matches booking records, manages session state, routes agent actions, and fires print payloads.
Agent Console
Web-based desk console, any device. Cognito-secured per agent. Live session queue across all properties. Approve, message, escalate, or mark key-issued.

What's included

Built for independent operators.

Not for enterprise chains with IT departments. Everything the kiosk needs to run on a tablet a handyman could set up.

🪪
US DL Scan — AAMVA On-Device
PDF417 barcode on the back of a US driver's license decoded locally using ZXing. Parsed fields (name, DOB, license number) transmitted only as structured text. The document image is never uploaded or stored.
🖨️
Two Print Paths
Standard network/AirPrint via the browser print dialog, or direct ESC/POS USB thermal printing (Epson TM-series) over WebUSB. No print server, no middleware, no driver install required.
📡
Offline-Tolerant Kiosk
PWA with service worker caching. If the connection drops mid-session the guest sees a clear state — not a blank screen. Help button triggers an agent alert immediately regardless of connectivity.
🏨
Multi-Property Agent Console
One agent console covers all your properties simultaneously. Live session queue. Approve, message the kiosk screen, or mark a key as issued — from a laptop, desktop, or phone. Cognito-scoped per agent.
👋
"Need Help?" Escalation
A persistent help button on every kiosk screen immediately flags the session in the agent queue. The guest is never left without a way to call for help — even if the main flow breaks down.
🔗
PMS Integrations — Roadmap
v1 uses a bookings file upload so properties can start immediately with any PMS. Direct API integrations with Cloudbeds, Mews, and Opera PMS are on the roadmap — we won't claim they exist yet.
Honest: roadmap, not built. Listed so you know where we're going.

Raw ID images never leave the tablet.

The kiosk camera feed is processed entirely on-device using the ZXing PDF417 decoder. Only structured text fields — first name, last name, date of birth, license number, expiry — are transmitted to match a booking. The actual document image is never stored, uploaded, or transmitted.

This is AAMVA design: the barcode encodes the text fields per a published standard. We parse the barcode, extract the fields, transmit the fields. That's it. No image. No scan archive. License number is used for local session verification only — not stored in our database.

What we're honest about

New product. No fabricated stats.

Boojee Check-In is in active production. Here is exactly what works, what needs real-world testing, and what's still ahead.

What is built and working

The kiosk PWA (camera scan, AAMVA barcode parse, booking match, slip print), the remote agent console, the backend API (Lambda + DynamoDB), and the full offline dev test suite — all pass. The demo at /boojee-checkin/kiosk/ and /boojee-checkin/desk/ is the real code.

What needs real-world testing

The ZXing PDF417 decoder hasn't been tested against every US state's driver's license format. The ESC/POS WebUSB print path needs testing against physical Epson TM printers in the field. Both work in testing — contact us before assuming they work on your hardware without a trial.

What's on the roadmap (not built yet)

Direct PMS API integrations (Cloudbeds, Mews, Opera) are roadmap items — the current booking match uses a file upload. We don't have native mobile apps — the kiosk is a browser PWA. We're saying this so you know what you're buying.

No reviews, no made-up metrics

This is a new product. We won't show fake testimonials or invented customer counts. If you want to be a founding property and have your experience documented (anonymously if you prefer), email us — that's the honest path to a case study.

FAQ

Common questions.

Does the kiosk store guest ID images?

No. The PDF417 barcode on the back of a US driver's license is decoded entirely on the kiosk device using ZXing. Only structured text fields — name, date of birth, license number, expiry — are transmitted to match a booking. The actual document image is never uploaded, stored, or transmitted to our servers.

What hardware do I need?

Any iPad (9th gen+) or Android 10+ tablet with a rear camera. For printing, any network-connected printer that supports AirPrint, or an Epson TM-series USB thermal printer for receipt-format slips over WebUSB. The kiosk PWA requires no app store installation — it runs in the browser. Hardware is not included in the subscription.

Can one remote agent cover multiple properties?

Yes — that's the core value proposition. On Pro and Estate plans, the agent console shows a unified live session queue across all properties. When a guest at Property A and a guest at Property B both check in at the same time, the agent sees two sessions in the queue and handles them sequentially. Each approval takes about 10 seconds.

Do you integrate with my PMS?

v1 uses a bookings-file upload — you export a nightly file from your PMS and upload it to Boojee Check-In. This works with any PMS that can export reservation data. Direct API integrations with Cloudbeds, Mews, and Opera PMS are on our roadmap. We'll announce them when they're ready. Many operators also pair Boojee Check-In with Boojee Menus for in-room QR dining menus and Boojee Booking for scheduling tours and amenity appointments — the full front-desk stack, no overnight hire.

What if the internet goes down mid-check-in?

The kiosk is a PWA with a service worker, so it doesn't blank out. If the connection to the backend drops, the guest sees a clear "connection lost" message with a visible help button that flags the session for the agent (if the agent console is still reachable via the property's backup connection). We don't pretend the kiosk works fully offline — booking matching requires a server call.

Is there a contract or minimum term?

No contract. All plans are month-to-month. Cancel any time with 30 days notice. We're honest: if you cancel abruptly during active setup we may need to recover hardware documentation we've provided. But there's no binding term.
